This afternoon we have had an impromptu trip to the Rosie hospital in Addenbrooks, which from where we live is highly inconvenient to reach. The bus took 45 minutes and that was with also zero traffic. By bike it is in the region of 30 to 35 minutes (even when 37 weeks pregnant). We are here for a repeat blood test and hoping that they will not recommend inducing the delivery. Fingers crossed.

My wondering around Yangshou
This day was was quite simply stunning. I hired a bike and headed out without a map or compass to explore the crazy limestone karst landscape around Yangshou with my then brand new Nikon D70 which I had picked up in Hong Kong. In fact I'd deliberately re-ordered my visit here specifically so that I would have my new camera with me in order to capture the landscape. I'm really glad I did. While my photography skills have since improved (I like to think), these images are so much richer and more impressive than the previous ones taken with my old Fuji. Can this really be exactly ten years ago today?

Scotland
As the sun sets here in England after a glorious late summer day I'm left wondering what will happen to the country I grew up in tomorrow. I like the UK. I like the fact that we are a union, working together despite our differences. If Scotland leaves then it will be a sad day, the breakup of a part of who I am, or at least a move closer to having to declare my nationality as English rather than British. But perhaps this is all simply my imperialistic tendencies and I should accept the future of independence for all rather than a One World Village utopia. I hope the UK is still together tomorrow. Good night.

Heather Walk in The Peak District
Some photos of our walk in the Peak District with my parents. We were up in Sheffield of the weekend to celebrate the baptism of my cousins's children. The weather was simply glorious and it was so lovely to get out into some PROPER GEOGRAPHY. When I see hills I can see the point of living somewhere; in East Anglia the flatness makes life just that little more futile. As we drove out from Sheffield the heather was simply stunning, clothing the hills in a rich blanket of warm pink. Where we were heading - a ridge walk from Mam Tor - turned out to have no heather at all, so after getting back to the car and a quick refreshment stop in the pub, we drove back to find a heather patch to walk in and experience. It really was quite magical.
